Cosmè Tura:
Painting and Design in Renaissance Ferrara

January 30 - May 12, 2002

The Gardner Museum presents an exhibition devoted to one of the most original artists of the early Renaissance, Cosmè Tura (ca. 1430-1495). Tura's art has an intense expressive power, and his style set the tone for the artistic culture in his native Ferrara. The exhibition will showcase Tura's paintings, as well as metalwork, tapestry, and manuscript illumination based on his designs. Several lectures, a concert of Renaissance Ferrarese music, and a public symposium (March 2, 2002) are also planned. Stephen Campbell, Assistant Professor, University of Pennsylvania, and Alan Chong, Norma Jean Calderwood Curator of the Collection at the Gardner Museum, are co-curators of the exhibition

Community Creations:

May 17 - 27, 2002

Community Creations is an annual student exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum that celebrates the collaboration between the Museum and six community organizations in the Boston area. Students from these organizations participated in Community Partnerships, a year-long multi-visit education program at the Gardner Museum for local teens and younger children. Inspired by the Gardner Museum and its collection, the students created two- and three- dimensional works of art for this exhibition. Their installations in the Museum's Special Exhibition Gallery and Monks Garden include: decorative chairs, an installation made out of grass, designer candlesticks, a clay dragon sculpture, self-portrait paintings and a ceramic tile installation.

Manfred Bischoff

June 6, 2002 -September 22, 2002

Manfred Bischoff is one of the great goldsmiths of Europe. Winner of many prizes and honors, Bischoff has pioneered an art vocabulary in jewelry for some twenty years. Born in 1947, he worked in Munich and Berlin before moving to Tuscany where he now resides. Through the years he has primarily worked with gold, coral, and jade. His minute sculptures are deceptively simple, barely masking the ferocious irony and satire that often underlines his work. His month long residency at the Gardner Museum in February 2002 is being spent contemplating and reading in preparation for his June installation.

Episodes: Bus Park & Forevermore

October 16, 2002 – January 5, 2003

Artist Nari Ward uses commonplace objects to create evocative, materially dense environments in which everyday materials are transformed into imaginary landscapes, resonating with the themes of memory, faith, history and the collective experience. While in residency at the Gardner Museum, Ward became very interested in the sense community at the Museum and in the behind-the-scenes activities of the Conservation and Education departments, two of the pivotal cornerstones of the Museum. Episodes: Bus Park & Forevermore, is a two part exhibition. Forevermore can be seen in the Special Exhibition Gallery while Bus Park is located outdoors in the garden.
